lost reverse on gearbox

My '69 GT6 will no longer select reverse. All other gears work fine, and the ball joint assembly directly below the shift lever is intact- I have not done further disassembly yet. When I push the shifter down and to the left and up, the shifter selects first gear- any ideas?? Is this outside or inside the 'box?--thanks!
