The damper is a small block Ford vibration damper, and it turns out that on the other timing cover (which I did not have handy when I was assembling this engine) the builder had grafted on a new pointer in a location that matched the timing marks on the damper, and ground the old pointer off. Did such a nice job of it I had no idea it was not the stock location. I've now done the same thing with the new cover. Easy solution, thankfully TDC was correctly marked, etc!
