Going to small tires is a good idea. I experienced how severe the gear reduction effect can be when I was running a set of 50 series 13" Hoosiers on my Rx2 with a 4.88 diff. That was a horrible combination. It reminded me of driving a truck with a granny gear. Very effective though.
However, I don't want high performance tires like those Hoosiers for this application. I am looking into converting my Spit to electric. Therefore, I will be looking for either cheap Taiwanese hard compound summer tires or, if I can find them, low rolling resistance tires similar to those found on the Toyota Prius but in a 13" size. I doubt that I would be able to find either type of tire in a 50 series.
Thank you for the information on the earlier differentials. From the sound of things, the swap is possible, but I would want to have two complete rear ends so that I can mix and match.
I wish I still had access to those Triumph Heralds at the Hidden Valley Auto Wrecking. Unfortunately, they sold to a developer during the housing boom... Now the boom is over and all those neat parts cars are crushed. Lousy developers.
