Nice car.
I used to post on Maxima.org, but quit after I sold my problem child 89 SE. I also can't get there from work anymore. It could get pretty snotty there at times.
I would pull off the top cover and use some kerosene. If there is any gritty material inside the trans, you may want to disassemble it, clean it well and reassemble it. I've acquired some pretty crappy cars and not had any with the trans fluid come out like jelly.

: Gents,
: Pulled the tranny today in the latest
: stage of my frame-off resto.
: Background: car hasn't been driven
: since 1996, but was runnign well when
: shut down. Tranny fluid was as thick as
: jelly when I drained it, but it was
: rebuilt about 2 years prior to
: shutdown.

: SO....I want to clean it out, but not
: do an actual rebuild. What is the best
: method to clean out all the old fluid,
: any metal shavings, etc? Any kind of
: solvent that would work well, any tips?
: Thanks.

: btw, if anyone wants to watch my
: rebuild, I have a thread in a
