Depends what you hate about it. Simplest way would be use the drivetrain from a later Spitfire (1500. Although the mk3 (68) engine is arguably better than the 1500 engine the rest is the drivetrain is an improvement and more or less a direct swap. It is also possible to mix and match parts.
Another route is to swap in parts from the GT6 which is a little more involved than the above but still pretty easy.
Beyond that, lots of things have been tried over the years. Everything from electric to big V8. Depends on your ambitions, skill levels and depth of pockets...
In my opinion a Toyota twincam 1600 and 5 speed sounds like a good route. The rear end is always the catch though as to sort this properly is quite serious work.
