I've replaced my fair share of u joints in my GT6. I jack the rear end up so both wheels are off the ground and stick a large screw driver in the u joint yoke and look for movement. You'll need to rotate the axel and check it in different positions. Odds are this is the problem. As far as the rotoflex couplings go, I've changed mine two or three times and have always had the same early splitting. I let them go until the crack is half way throught the coupling (but I'm nuts). I've never found the splitting coupling to be the cause of the clunk.
