The state of tune, cam, compression, intake & exhaust, etc will dictate needle requirements. The BDQ is a relatively lean needle spec. Does it show other signs of running lean?
Have you checked your advance curve? You could be getting too much advance at a certain point ie it's coming in too quickly for that engine speed. The curve is controlled by the vacuum units & the mechanical counterweights in the distributor.
FWIW I usually run just mechanical advance. You adjust the curve by changing the springs & you can mod the full advance by welding/grinding the advance stop. Remember 1 degree in the distributor = 2 crank degrees.
