"" I honestly think there are more bands around here nowadays who would regard themselves as some flavour of metal (be them good or terrible) than there were when I started the NMW. And you hear about them doing this and that, but I have no contact with them, hardly see them to talk to and ask whats going on with that particual band. Because I don’t go out as much as I did, and because of dwindling venues and boozers neither do bands. It’s true man, I’d be out every Friday and Saturday night every week at one point going to gigs all over the place. I’d get some news story scribbled down on a beer matt, so and so has left the band or there’s a gig here next week with bla bla bla. Not any more. It doesn’t happen and I don’t want to go out that much any more anyway, I’m 32 and skint with a beer belly fit for a darts champion. The other thing is, nowadays it would seem every member of every band has some form of website skills, be it their own snazzy website, a MySpace page or whatever. When I started NMW this wasn’t the case at all so me doing news bits for bands, contact details, whatever, actually helped. They can all do it themselves nowadays. Even Asomvel are I.T. literate! heheheh I don’t mind admitting that NMW was very Bradford orientated, because that was where it was at. Fact. But Bradford, and the people, and indeed ‘Metal’ has changed a lot in 10 years. And so have I. I’m not saying I’m not into metal anymore, far from it, but rather than taking quite a lot of time to chase up bands and find out what news they have, I have a POD guitar set up on my desk at work (where I run NMW from, in my free time on an evening when I am on call / overtime), I’d rather be practicing my thrash riffage. I really need to practice more y’know, I am a terrible guitarist at the moment. I really want to get good so its practice practice practice at the moment. At one point I really came to hate that word ‘scene’, but now it’s an about turn and I do totally miss what we had going. Yes with the Empress, yes with Rio’s, yes with lots of the bands that have split up and gone. Whether I liked it or not it was quite a scene, linking in with the likes of Halifax Dewsbury Wakey Leeds and Hudds and occasionally outer lying areas. I’ve no idea what’s going on in these places really, be it the fault of the people, the places, the scene or myself I don’t know, nor care really. I got a lot of info and contact from meeting people through BloodStream too, which isn’t happening now so that doesn’t help either. Most websites like that don’t last half as long as NMW did, and didn’t really do anything useful other than repeat news they’d nicked from other metal websites. At least I know that mine helped a few people with this that and the other and made me quite a lot of friends, which is fantastic. I really hope that I am wrong and there is still some vibe kicking about, but if there is I don’t know about it. Not like it was. The truth is, I honestly don’t think too many people will care anyway. Naaaaah my future lies with a flat stomach and 80's THRASH METAL! hahahahaha
