Posted by Alec on March 20, 2007, 1:22 pm, in reply to "Re: BFD RIO'S CLOSING - LET US REMINISCE!!" I do remember when you could go in Rio's on a Friday night and see loads of people you knew, who were all friendly. I could go there on my own and spend ages just walking round chatting to folks and meeting new people. There was at least something pumping out of the PA that you could relate to. When the whole nu-metal thing started happening, it kinda got a bit ugly. The younger crowd had bigger chips on their shoulders and you were no longer met with smiles and grins. I think in some respects that trend continued and the nu-metal kids devolved into chavs and the so called "metal" music became even more indistinguishable from shit dance music. Then there's this "emo" thing that I don't really understand at all as I am over 30. They seem harmless enough? Has anyone been to Rio's recently on a Friday night? It's bloody awful! No, I mean it's worse than that! And on a Saturday, you never know if it is gonna actually be a rock night these days. So maybe the Gasworks doesn't quite grab that magic of yesteryear pubs and clubs but I know where I am with the place and I have had some great nights in there. --Previous Message--

I dunno, I think contemporary mainstream metal lost its way (in Rio's anyway). They have never been that big on underground music up there anyway. Sure, the gigs were good but the disco that followed never followed the theme of the gig.

: Thing is, it's not really closing as such.
