Hi folks - please RSVP here or send me an email at eckilson@cox.net if if you plan to attend the Easy Whitewater Trip on the Deerfield River this Saturday, August 5th.
Forecast looks great with mostly sunny skies and a high near 75. This trip is about 7 miles, and is mostly quickwater with a couple of easy class II rapids at the beginning. We will put in at the Zoar Picnic Area and take out at Charlemont Academy. Boats 14 feet or under are required, as is a helmet and sprayskirt. I may have an extra helmet if you need one.
For now, let's plan to meet at 11:00 at the paved pull over on the left of Rte 2 just before Charlemont Academy. Address is 1554 Mohawk Trail, Charlemont, MA 01339. The meeting time may change depending on the release schedule, which will be posted here the Friday before:
We will put in at Zoar Picnic Area 3 hours after the release starts. If the release is at 9:00 (hopefully due to the Deerfieldfest), then our 11:00 meeting time is good, and we will get on the water at noon. If it is later, everything will get pushed back.
Here are the directions:
Take I-90 West to I-91 North in Springfield. Proceed north on I-91 to exit 26 in Greenfield, MA. Go around the rotary and pick up Rte 2 West. Continue on Rte 2 West about 14.5 miles. We will meet at the paved pull over on the left side of Rte 2 just before Charlemont Academy at 1554 Mohawk Trail, Charlemont, MA 01339.
Again, please RSVP and check back here for changes.
Hi, Eric, I'm interested in trying out that section of the Deerfield. I've been paddling on the Blackstone a lot and I'm pretty comfortable with the Millville rapids which are class II at around 1200 cfs. Oh, and I do have a spray deck and a NRS helmet, boat is 9.5 ft. Since I've never been up to the Deerfield I'm not sure about the logistics of this trip but I'm sure we'll figure it out, sounds like fun.
Perfect - we"ll meet at 11:00 at the take-out - the paved pull over on the left of Rte 2 just before Charlemont Academy. Address is 1554 Mohawk Trail, Charlemont, MA 01339. We'll consolidate boats and head up to the Zoar Picnic Area. My cell is 617-794-0378.
