As I recall, the put in above the dam is a good distance away from the dam and, except perhaps in flood conditions when you should stay off the river anyways, current is minimal and likely no problem for you.
The paddle across the river to enter the canal from there is usually safe too, except in very high water. The carry over some rock into the canal is no picnic (watch the poison ivy along the wall!) but it is worth it. The loop trip taht Erik mentioned is great...no shuttle for you! Again, tho, the carry up into the canal at Pratt Dam is no picnic. And the first time you go on this trip, go with someone familiar with it...if you miss the take out from the river you have to contend with narrow tubes through the dam that the river flows through with phenomenal force. I know people who have run them unscathed, but that is by no means a guarantee...easy to find junk blocking those tubes.
A DY special! Nice! Not too many solo boats found in RI, so it is always nice to see another solo open boater about. I'd be happy to accompany you on the loop trip one day, as I am sure Erik would be.
