Hi Doug - lots of dams on the Blackstone, and its good to be cautious - especially in high water. In typical conditions you shouldn't have a problem – but I’m not sure how fast the water runs through the gates on the east side of the Ashton Dam. I always use the landing on the west (Lincoln) side of the dam in the entrance to the Blackstone Canal. You put-in to the Blackstone Canal and paddle up toward the dam. There are stairs which allow you to cross over into the river - avoids the gates on the east side all together.
There are lots of great flatwater trips on the Blackstone. Another alternative from Ashton is the canal/river loop from Ashton to Lonsdale (down the river, up the canal) – be careful at the Pratt Dam. You can put-in at Manville Dam (east side) and go up about 4 miles to Woonsocket – people fish there a lot. You can put-in at the Bike Path in Albion (put-in is off the bike path above the dam) and paddle up to the dam in Manville. You can also paddle the Valley Falls Marsh – put in below the Pratt Dam or at the Landing off Broad Street in Valley Falls.
I’m in Woonsocket – maybe we can get together sometime.
Erik
