I was out there in September. Nantucket Harbor itself is almost completely enclosed from the open ocean or Nantucket sound. So it is basically like paddling on Pleasant Bay or maybe Welfleet Harbor. There are lots of boats around and some houses. If you really want to get away from people you can cross the harbor to a huge barrier beach, the name of which i do not recall. The harbor is about 1-2 miles wide by 8 miles long. You can really make a day of it. Normally paddling is pretty benign although the day i was out, there was a gusty 25 MPH wind blowing off shore, and thunder storms, not the norm. The harbor is on the protected side of the island. Check out Sea kayak Nantucket and Nantucket kayak rentals if you decide to go that route. I would be completely comfortable in the kayak you describe, but bring a cell phone and have a land contact if you go alone. best wishes, have fun
Rick
