Hi Keith - don’t know about work on the canal, but another thing to consider is ice – which reminds me of a story…
Bill L. and I decided to do the canal/river loop on the day before New Year’s 2006. Plan was to put-in at Plummers Landing at take-out at Rice Pond. It was cold and snowy, but we were dressed for the weather. Everything went fine until we got down to the Stanley Woolen Mill and crossed over to the canal – the canal was iced over! The ice didn’t look too thick, so I put my canoe in the water to see if we could paddle through it. – no way. We left our boats by the walking trail along the canal and walked back up to Rice Pond to get a car.
While we were gone, someone walking along the canal - seeing two empty boats and broken ice in the canal - called the police. I guess they thought we fell in. The policeman was waiting for us when we got back to the boats, but didn’t give us too much trouble.
Anyway, we decided to take out across from the Stanley Woolen Mill and had a good time running the broken dam at the take out. Moral of the story – check the canal for ice before your start.
