I am a resident of Burriville , whose property abuts the Nipmuc River. The Nipmuc joins the Clear River prior to the Dam in Harrisville and then continues on as the Clear River(this is erronously called the Branch River). The Nipmuc is listed by the RIDEM as a Pristine Water body -the highest designation for a water body. I have recently become what I call, a wilderness river kayaker. The Nipmuc is accessible at the Shippee bridge and can be paddled upstream now (a portage may be necessary around the beaver dams) to the 90 degree left bend just past the water depth gauge ( 1/2 hour paddle). Beyond that it is too technical and swift to travel up stream. Over the summer, I walked the entire lenght from the beginning on Brook Rd at Round Top Pond to the water gauge. I cleared all the fallen trees of decades ago - cleared the debris wash dams and cleared the sides of all dangerous overgrown growth. It is FULLY navigable without a portage for the entire one and 1/2 hr ride down this scenic remote river. Of course this depends on river flow, which as you know is much too low now. It is largely quick water class 1 maybe 2 under the right conditions. Hope to see some folks enjoying it out there soon. It's a secret I can't keep to myself.
