pennyfarthing_56 is selling several, shall we say, pieces of interest on eBay. Would love to hear your thoughts about the authenticity of this particular soap dish. Thank you.

Hi Laurie, Did you have a particular "red flag" about this piece or just interested in it? From the photos, the blue looks good. The lid appears to have the crazing and decorator's number that are common on many pieces of flow blue. Without research into the pattern, it's not clear whether the circa date of 1880 is correct. Just taking a quick glance, I'd think it was a little later, but that's not conclusive. The handle and embossing look accurate for the period. The gold shows some wear around the edge of the lid, as you would expect, and the sponging is not unusual. All in all, it looks like a nice three-piece soap dish. What were your thoughts? Cindy

I adore this piece. My red flag or concern is that it's a piece of new Flow Blue--and my judgement might be clouded because I'm drawn to it. It just seems too good to be true--I don't see much wear at all.

I agree with Cindy. It does look like a legitimate piece, not a new flow blue piece. Almost looks like a Johnson or Meakin piece, but couldn't swear to it. I think it is a find!

When you use the "zoom" feature on the photos, you will see some crazing and some slight wear to the gold around the edge of the lid that is consistent with age. The wear could be minimal because that particular piece didn't get used much. Sometimes it's just that simple. The thing that says "authentic" more than anything else to me is the red decorator's number under the lid. My experience is limited, but I've never seen that particular type of mark on a reproduction piece. When you use the word "adore" it's serious! Hope you win the auction and enjoy the piece. Cindy

Hi Laurie: I just added you to the facebook group that I created last year. It is not something that the flow blue club started, but I happened to group flow blue members on my facebook page, and so now alot of members are on it. Hope you like it: there are alot of pictures that members of the group put on, and if you have any questions, someone always has something to contribute. Hope to meet you in Springfield at the convention: you have joined a group of people that are really out there to help you learn about your collection, and they are all really nice people! Judy
