Although Monica South includes this pattern in her Gaudy Welsh Vol.2 book, she does state on page 16 of her Vol. 1 that "(Gaudy Welsh) always contains burnt orange or rust, cobalt blue, which must be under the glaze, and green of various hues." Obviously, the "Melody" pattern does not include a russet/rust/burnt orange color. So what does this mean? Other sources specify those same colors but also mention pink luster or copper luster as being equally diagnostic. ("The Gaudy Welsh palette is composed mainly of underglaze cobalt blue, with a pink lustre (that appears copper when applied overglaze onto the cobalt blue), green, and russet.") Shuman ("Gaudy Dutch and Welsh") goes into great detail over the full palette of colors found on both ceramic types but does not offer a defining palette for either. Both Dan Sapira's comment and Monica South's Vol.2 entry demonstrate that some collectors are less strict in their description of the Gaudy Welsh palette (and thus the technical definition of Gaudy Welsh) than others.
