Brown spots

Could anyone tell me what would cause brown spots on/in old flow blue pieces? Is there anything that can be done about them? The piece I am referring to has Panama on the back. Is this a pattern name? I know nothing about flow blue. I'm trying to do some research for a friend and don't know where to start. Thanks for any help you can give.
