Call waiting

We have an Encore CX system in our home. When trying to receive call waiting calls on a single line, we are hitting the receiver button like on a regular phone, but the caller is disconnected. What are we doing wrong? Is there another key that is the hookflash? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
