I have had a few older horses and mine they always lost weight in the middle also. I have found (with Some) adding weight builder to their feed. it is safe and doesnt add the harsh calories in amounts that wont cause founder and other problems. Also have you tried equine senior?? i have my now 35 year old qh/draft/paint gelding(he is 1100 pounds and stands a short 15.2 hands, and i feed him 4 large scoops am -- 2 lrg scoops noon-- and 5 lrg scoops pm. vet says he is not getting too much and he keeps his weight up. also if you know about what time in the middle of winter they loose it, try adding feed and supplements a month before they start to loose it, so that way they wont be loosing and gaining and loosing again. i hope this helped you.
: I have had horses my whole life, but I
: am always willing to learn more
: about feed. My three older horses
: always start to drop weight in the
: middle of the winter. They are
: roughly between 12-20 yrs old. They
: have good quality hay at all times.
: I feed Triple Crown senior and
: Reliance 10. They are all dewormed
: regularly. I have used beet pulp in
: the past with no success other than
: a mess. I have started adding veg
: oil slowly to their ration. I am
: wondering how often I increase it
: and to what amount they can get.
: Dont want them to get the runs. Any
: info or links would be helpful.
: Thanks in advance.
