Help finding history about a horse?

Does anyone have any suggestions of places to inquire if anyone knows about the history on a horse I just bought? I got her at auction, where she was headed for slaughter. I believe she is older and is an overo paint, so has identifiable markings. She is very sweet and gentle, so someone must have cared for her once. Right now she is in terrible shape. I would love to know her name and any history about her.
