Posted by Nancy on 12/4/2005, 3:48 pm The mares were all kept out in the field throughout their pregnancies, and allowed to foal outside. No problem. But there was never any assistance given to the horses. At one point, some of the broodmares were struck by lightning as they stood alongside a metal gate. Several were killed, at least one was blinded. Had she not been taken in by a kind, local woman, she would have been shot. That was Fantasy's fate too. She foaled outside with no one there to assist if she needed it, and subsequently suffered a recto-vaginal tear. For some reason, no one decided to do anything about it. At the same time that the blind mare was picked up for rescue, Fantasy was seen running madly from one side of a paddock to the other. When the owner was asked about Fantasy, she apparently replied that once she was caught and held, that she would be shot. The lady (who now boards -my- horse for me) caught Fantasy and loaded her up as well and has kept her for three years. Surgery to repair Fantasy's problem was out of the question, even though it was looked into. Her new owner simply did not have the financial means to do it. The cost was estimated to be $3500. Fantasy recently got a new owner. Her rescuer had gone through the trouble and time to gentle her again to human touch, but with her own horses to care for, simply didn't have the time to -devote- to her. When the problem was explained to me, I suggested a friend of mine, Nellie. She had never owned a horse, but has loved them since she was a child, just like me. Because Nellie is my best friend, and because she and Fantasy got along famously during the first ride, Fantasy was 'sold' to Nellie for free. She is still stabled at the same place, only now she has a loving 'mum'. However, because of the vaginal tear - she often has manure in her vulva, which can cause a multitude of problems. Her tail is an impossible thing to keep clean, matted with manure that just falls freely. She simply does not have the musculature because of the tear, to keep herself clean. To make her problem worse, she windsucks. Any filth that is present then gets pulled inside. So far, she seems to be in splendid health otherwise. And here is the crux of the post. For Christmas (or even a little afterwards), I would like to be able to give Nellie and Fantasy a surgery to make Fantasy's life 'perfect'. No more mess, no more infection. I will be contacting local veterinarians to see what all this will entail, but I will operate off of the $3500 quoted previously. If not the entire surgery, $3500 will take a GENEROUS chunk out of the cost, certainly. And if it doesn't cover, if it's manageable, I will try to cover the rest myself. I will be posting this on as many boards as I can find (hopefully it doesn't offend anyone!!!!). And if you know of any message boards where this would rouse interest, please don't hesitate to post it please!! If someone does find this request offensive, please feel free to remove the post – it’s not my intention to offend someone. My purpose is to further improve the life of a very sweet, young horse. If you would like to donate, I have my contact information below, as well as a link for pics of Fantasy (I have to take more, she's all furry!). And anyone who donates and wishes for the information, I promise to keep you updated on the progress both before and after the surgery. Fantasy’s Album: http://www.albums.gamelynx.net/fantasy.html

Fantasy is a 9-year-old granddaughter of Kentucky Derby winner Northern Dancer. She had a short career at a local racetrack before she was retired to become a broodmare.
