Do readers know if the FSI get paid?

Has anyone read an instory reference confirming any kind of pay or stipend the Fifty State Initiative members receive. Mrs Rogers in ASM 570 got me wondering...

In the USA do ALL Unions form only for members who are getting PAID for something? Curious before assuming the FSI members are heroes GETTING PAID and all the connotations of that fact.
