Meet a Mod: Hi, I'm Scribs!

Hello, everyone! I'm Karen Scribano, known on the board as "Scribs" (and sometimes "Scribsace" when I'm sewing!) I've been around since the board started (well, actually I've been around a lot longer than that), but I've been so quiet lately that some of you "newbie" divas & divos may not know me. I'm not really so much a moderator; I'm the web person for Doll Divas...and yes, I'm the one who deserves scolding when the web pages and archives need updating! (Like now...hang in there...I'll get to it!) Below is a fairly recent picture of my family. I met my hubby at Iowa State University, and we dated "like, forEVER" before finally getting married in 1989...yep, we'll celebrate #19 this summer! We have two daughters, Pauline (age 6) and Rebecca (age 8). I like this picture because it is just washed out enough that you can't see my wrinkles! HAAA!!!
I grew up on a farm in western Iowa, but Rob & I moved to Chicago after getting married (he's from there). During that time, I worked for a while as a secretary in a large financial firm right in downtown Chicago, until I eventually found a wonderful job with Loyola University. I worked as the assistant director of admission at the law school, helping to recruit students, and I was also in charge of the office database...creating reports and keeping statistics on the incoming class. I love working on computers, but really I am a "people" person, so that job was perfect for me. During my tenure there, I earned a master's degree in "College Student Personnel" -- a fancy name for "student services." I loved almost everything about that job and being at Loyola, but when Rebecca was born, I was ready to stay home with her. Never regretted that decision and never missed being at work! LOL! After 16 years in Chicago, we decided we'd had enough of city life, and we now live on 4 acres of land just south of Iowa's capital city of Des Moines. The rest of our "family" here include 2 indoor cats and 5 outdoor cats, 4 of which were born here since we moved to this place about 3 years ago. Here are our indoor babies: Simon is allowed outdoors and LOVES it:
Little Black "Magic" -- he doesn't like to look at me when I have the camera! He's our "rescue league" kitty:
We have more animal visitors than people here, it seems, including neighborhood dogs who cruise through our yard during morning "rounds," a few horses every summer that escape from nearby pastures, red-tailed hawks that soar overhead daily, an oppossum or two, a raccoon who made its home in our barn all winter, and yes, an occasional snake! (Sorry, no pictures of those.) But here is a glimpse of the view from my back deck (taken during Dee Dee's visit)...the pasture that the dolls' heads are "in" is part of our acreage:
And what a nice transition that picture is for talking about my doll collection! LOL! Like a few others of you, E-Bay was responsible for getting me started as an adult collector. I decided to try e-Bay to find some Barbie items for my daughter for Christmas about 5 years ago. While looking through the listings, I was confused about the references for "Silkstone" Barbie. Of course, you can guess the rest. Once I saw those gals, I couldn't stop looking at them! I splurged and bought "Lisette" for myself. I really thought I would just get that one doll...just for fun. (Yeah, right!) Soon I was googling for anything about "Silkstones." That led me to a web site for MAD Doll Stands, where she had some gorgeous pictures of her Silkies...and her site led me to a Yahoo group for Silkstone lovers, and the next thing you know I bought a cabinet to hold my growing collection! Along the way, though, MAD (Mary Ann) became one of my best doll buds! We talked through the Yahoo group, then on the phone, and now we have been to 3 National Barbie Conventions together...and we'll be in Kansas City this summer, too! Look us up!! I know some of you here have talked about how you are quiet in person, but find it easy to visit on the boards and online. I'm a bit of the opposite...I don't tend to post much online, but if you meet me in person, I'm far from shy!! Here is a picture of MAD and me in Los Angeles as "Scarlett & Rhett" -- thank goodness my husband is secure about my orientation, or he might have been worried -- I thought I made a pretty good lookin' Rhett! HAAA!!
And here we are in Dallas last year...ready to do some line dancing:
And again in Dallas during the fashion show...MaryAnn in on the far left, I'm in the blue, and to my right are Nancy W. and Swapmama...we had a blast being the Hardrock girls!
One more of us being "normal" at our sales table:
I'll post some pics of my doll room in another post...coming right up!
