(THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF PART 2 - GO BACK IF YOU MISSED PART 1). Home is also where I enjoy my other hobby: paper crafting. I make greeting cards and scrapbooks in our home office/craft room. So, because I already have one hobby room in my house, a second hobby room (e.g. doll room) is something I will have to wait for. I get together with a group of friends once a month and craft cards. Here’s a sampling of some cards I’ve created.
I‘m also a member of a local Barbie Club. We get together every other month and have great meetings. I just co-hosted this month’s meeting which was themed, A Night at the Oscars. There is a lot of prep involved for each meeting host, so this just adds to my crazy schedule! Fellow board members have also helped me craft goodies to give away at these meetings. My thanks go to Angie of BCCan designs, Tula O’Reilly and Vin Trapani. It’s great to know such nice and talented people. ;o) Here is a giveaway from our meeting last month. Each member received a different set of “Red Carpet Essentials” It was fun putting it all together.
My parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year and I have one brother who lives in Germany with his family. His wife is German and my sister-in-law on my hubby’s side is from Puerto Rico, so I feel we have an international mix because my ancestry is Italian, so with the celebrating of so many cultural customs, we’re enjoying lots of worldly traditions each holiday!
I work for a major women’s clothing retailer at their corporate office doing writing, graphic design and other communication-related projects. I have been at my job for ages and still enjoy it. I have a BA degree in Communications, with a specialization in Public Relations. I like to travel, and my hubby and I often go on a ski trip once a year. We recently took my daughter skiing for the first time last month. There was no real skiing going on, but she was smiling! Here she is with her dad! (See what I mean about always being the one BEHIND the camera?)
My doll collecting really took off when the Barbie Fashion Model Collection was introduced in 2000. Before then, I craved sophisticated dolls. (Ah, we're FINALLY talKing about dolls!)
Then came Fashion Royalty, which caused me to cease all other personal spending so I could afford to buy them. I am proud to say that I used an FAO Schwarz gift card that I had to buy something for my daughter and NOT to buy a doll for me ;o).
Recently I have gotten into more vinyl Barbies with the introduction of the Model Muse body, which I just love.
I mostly like doll collecting for the fashion. I prefer dolls I can redress and play with to those that look perfect as issued. When they are too perfect, I feel like I can’t play with them and have fun. How did I get into the diorama thing?
My love of all things small began when I was very young. I gravitated toward minis… marbles, little things that came out of gumball machines, dollhouses and, of course, Barbie and her oh-so-tiny wardrobe. Then, there was my love of organizing. I loved playing with Colorforms and arranging them in a scene, then putting them ALL back on the little cards for safe keeping.
I even colorized my box of Crayolas (crazy, huh? - Oh, but I had to smell them all first!).
I loved playing with and arranging doll house furnishings and my mod Barbie house with the Carnaby Street sign. Then came my love of fashion (no wonder I work for a clothing retailer, eh?). Well, when you combine a love of small things, fashion and a need to arrange things, it’s no wonder I ended up loving the idea of creating mini dioramas for my dolls.
This actually evolved out of the fact that I don’t have a doll room in which to display my dolls. So, I began to photograph them so I could remember particular outfits I liked and share the photos with others. When digital cameras came along, I was able to take decent photos with little effort. My dolls often looked kind of boring just hanging out in front of a white backdrop, so I hunted for little props to add to the photos to give them some interest. Well, the rest is history.
I still host the Diorama Discussions here at Divas, where I specialize in knock-down, fit-under-the-couch or under-the-bed sets, since I have no where to put permanent structures.
I also serve as Fashion Editor at Large for Fashion Doll Quarterly magazine where I get to showcase some of my writing, layout and doll photography. I enjoy it, but it keeps me busy and leaves me less and less time to take fun shots to share with you all on the boards. However, I LOVE seeing what you all are posting and sharing and I always invite you to share your diorama ideas and projects with me and fellow board members. Thanks so much for taking the time to learn more about me. I enjoyed sharing with you ;o) DeeinNJ
