It was 1979, my son was 9 years old. We were doing our laundry at a laundromat near Harvard Square, where Dizzy Gillespie was appearing at a book signing for his book, To Be or Not to Bop. My son and I put our laundry in a machine and walked over to the bookstore. When Mr. Gillespie arrived, he immediately took to my son and the two of them had a great time for hours and hours. That day, any time someone asked for a photo of Dizzy, he would call out across the bookstore for my son, who would run and sit on Dizzy's lap. So each and every photo taken that day has my son sitting with Mr. Gillespie. When we were getting ready to leave (remember, our laundry was still at the laundromat), Dizzy would protest and ask us to stay with him. Laundry be damned -- you know we stayed! What a wonderful memory for both me and my son.
