Steve Earle on the Van Zandt 'cult' (audio)

'The US singer-songwriter Steve Earle has been interviewed several times over the years about his political views on the war on terror and death row.

But more recently his appearance on the cult US television series the Wire has taken him back to the issue of drugs which has dogged most of his life.

Reporter Nicola Stanbridge met him as he starts a UK tour to talk about his new album of song written by his mentor and friend Townes Van Zandt.'

Thanks sau. Me brothers got tickets to see him on wednesday, me sadly not but i've seen him loads of times before and anyway i prefer him when playing with the full band, The Dukes. Steves Townes album is good but i'm just too caught up in the original recordings. If you want to get into Townes the best introduction is the album that is not strictly the first one but kind of an incarnation of it. Our Mother The Mountain is basically poetry with incidental music, dripping in beautifull and melancholgy metaphor, mind blowing stuff.
