It is really fascinating. I don't know if The Guardian doctored the photo or if they deliberately chose the most masculine frame, we all look strange through the lens from time to time. It is certainly a tale that plays with our perceptions of what a man or woman is.

Roughly speaking,and without getting into unnecessary detail, anything that has balls is a man and anything that doesn't, is a woman.(answering the last part of your question first)
Now, as for the looks of this particular athlete, there have been far uglier ones especially some East German ones!
No, I haven't followed the story apart from the sex testing bit!

I read a bok by Jeffrey Eugenides about a girl who was brought up a girl but then had to become a man when she discovered she was a man in the inside. I wondered if that might be the case.

3x a (high) normal level for women would still be less than a low normal level for a man. i'm not sure how significant this is.

aren't the most successful female athletes always going to be the most masculine ones?

why is this surprising?

Do female athletes generally have this high level? Is it surprising? You asked the question in what seems to be rhetorical tone, what's the data?

I heard on the radio that a man has between 40 and 60 times the testosterone levels of a woman. If this is so then surely the 3x figure would indicate that "she" is not a man.
