Not a smoker's cough; just a plain London asthmatic's. I would have gone into extensive detail about my books, but someone kept interrupting me with propaganda for Scottish independence. I was about to go into extensive detail about my books a couple of times this week, but two persons called Hilary Mantel and Herta Müller intervened. Often people ask me to go into extensive detail about my books. "Philip, go into extensive detail about your books," they say. They often say this in noisy rooms or crowded Tube carriages. The crowds usually seem quite eager to buy - they all rush out almost before the details become genuinely extensive - but somehow this never seems to translate into rowlingesque or dacrestokerian sales figures. As soon as the room or the Tube carriage is clear, even the people who originally asked me to go into extensive detail about my books often seem to lose interest. Sometimes they have been so apathetic that they have resorted to binding and gagging me in an effort to indicate their preoccupation with other matters. Marketing is a very odd affair, I think.
PS Downloading the pdf version means that you don't have to pay postage costs and I get a bigger percentage of the price.
