I don't think he's a joke at all. There is no harm in teaching the other side of the religious story, goodness knows we overdose on religion whether we want to or not.
As for religious belief being a manifestation of evolution, that isn't a fact, its an opinion...most of our evolving was already done before we engaged in relgious ceremony, part of our social culture it is but that's as far as it goes.
