It's an old technique -much older than people realise. Jules Verne's novel, "Around the World in Eighty Days," was initially published in serialised form and various shipping companies approached Verne to be included by name. The more recent examples are just a lot more heavy-handed -I remember being quite irritated by the various placements of the Ericsson K800 phone in "Casino Royale." Oddly enough, I bought the same phone a few months later, although I can honestly say I didn't make the conscious mental connection at the time.
If Hersh drops by, I'm sure he'll share a few examples.
Of course, there will be no suggestion of McDonalds influencing Fox's editorial -sadly, it's probably true that they wouldn't need to do so anyway.
