hi dread it is safe to poke your finger in while the engine is running i have done it a couple of times, you do need to be able to feel if the cog is turning when it shouldn't be,your finger only goes on the smooth side of the cog,the only real danger is possible slight friction burns if the cog is turning

: A great description Mark C told me about this
: a month or so back. I'll have to give it a
: go. I might find someone else to stick their
: finger in though as I like having all 10 of
: mine. Would something else be a better
: substitue ie a stubby screw driver or
: something similar or is it about feeling
: what hapening to the cog. Or is it just
: safer to take it apart and check everythings
: tightened?

: ok guys hope this helps you all out, like i
: said i had this problem for ten years, when
: the engine is hot and you press the starter
: button ,the engine turns over slowly(or not
: at all),similar to having a flat battery,i
: bought numerous batterys and new starter
: motors(you may remember me asking for
: starter motors on this forum ?)it turned out
: to be the starter clutch, what you need yo do
: is ,start the bike, warm it up untill it's
: ideling smoothly, without stopping the motor
: ,take out the starter motor, poke your finger
: into the hole and feel for the cog that the
: starter mortor engages with,it shouldn't be
: turning or shouldn't take much finger
: pressure to stop it(it is safe to poke your
: finger in while the engine is running)with
: your finger on the cog ,slowley increase the
: revs if as the engine speed increases you
: find that you can't stop the cog turning
: then your starter clutch is naff,i got one
: at a breakers for ten pounds off of a suzuki
: gs 850,there are many bikes that use the
: same starter clutch,so they aint hard to
: get, also sometimes the three bolts that hold
: the starter clutch together sometimes work
: loose (mine did all the time,no matter how
: much i tightened them,so i put a little tack
: weld to stop that)and engage with the big
: ring gear,so what happens is ,that the
: starter motor is going round with the
: engine,gets hot,partially seizes and then
: won't turn the engine over, once this has
: happened the starter motor is knackered and
: will need replacing(even though it works if
: you take it out and put it on a
: battery,trust me on this)hopefully this will
: sort the problem, would appreciate feedback
: from anyone who tries this,my numbers are
: 01752 301083 or 07795817540,this problem
: drove me mad over ten years and caused a lot
: of embarrasement for me, so guys try it and
: please let me know how get onor if you need
: any more info, please phone me,regards to you
