I can't speak for everyone's class but......it was once like this and maybe it should be again?!
80cc 7-11
80cc 12-13
80cc 14-15
No A or B restrictions, just age?. And it seemed to work back then just fine? And I would think that at the ages 7-8 would be tough ( unless a phenom of sorts ) but you also have the rewards side at the ages of 10-11 ( 4 years in one class )to show you what that experience has given you?
It was not to long ago PPL once you got 15pts. in the "C" class, you were bumped to B. And NO season ending points and factory bucks for C classes either. A full year on a bike and your not a novice, no matter how fast you go, so? The C class is really for beginners. And we all know that class is ridiculous fast!
And as a B rider when you got 80pts. you could move up and at 120pts. you had to move up! Again no reason to "bag" the B class. It was simply a prelude to the A class with nothing but a trophy at days end.
Money is a great thing for the sport, but it also the down fall of the sport at a certain point. ( like the SX deals only now that have really hurt the sport at the top level )And it will circle back to those days if things get worse and factories fold up the programs all together. PPL won't pay to bag a class for a measly trophy.
That said I feel your frustrations and concerns. Change is tough. But I think we need to be thankful for what we do have maybe? I know others across the country do not have as good as we do. With the exception of SoCal, no one is more represented than the north east in the MX world!!
