The members' list of suggested films was taken extremely seriously. That list formed the principal part of many committee discussions. Some films were rejected because the Society had already screened them, some were rejected because they had played recently at the Kino, some were put on hold because "that would give us too many French films" etc etc.
The selection process is long and thorough. Most committee members keep a running list of films for consideration for the following years- then in Nov/Dec we start screenings of films that are under consideration. This continues on a near weekly basis through till April. Combined with the BFFS screenings in London - by the end of April/early May we have a democratically-arrived-at programme for the following year.
The reason for inviting the members to suggest films is that much of the membership is extremely film-savvy and has quite probably seen films that members of the committee might not have seen. We want to have closer and more active ties with the membership, in all sorts of ways, and will continue to seek suggestions for films that members think "would be perfect for Film Club."
Thank you for your suggestion about possibly putting a list of 20 films on the website and getting the members to choose - I will raise it at the next committee meeting. It has advantages and disadvantages. Thanks for your continued interest and participation in the film society.
