Posted by Connie Dabner From these it will be clearer for us all when we can see how the church will look without the pews, and again with stacking chairs. Way back in time the pews were removed in the St Thomas chapel, I believe, and chairs were borrowed and tried out. As you know the pews were put back as it was preferred that way. St Dunstan’s church is at the heart of our town and also the heart of the community. Please do come to the meeting to register your opinion. Whatever your view, young and old, now is the time to stand up and be counted and that way we will enjoy a fair and democratic outcome. Perhaps after we have been informed of what is proposed it would be the time to have a very clear questionnaire. The secrecy that has clouded the process so far is unacceptable. The previous questionnaire, nearly two years ago was ambiguous; even so, the outcome was, that out of a return of 40% about 200, of those asked only 7 people agreed that a more flexible space was needed. What do we need when we have the Vestry hall and the facilities of church house so close to hand and the Vine Church just opposite? The church belongs to the congregation and the people of the town whose forbearers built and ornamented it to the glory of God and their own sense of continuity, with their money, their passion and their love of God and, in some cases, dedicated their lives to its service’. We are merely the custodians of it and have no right to make sweeping changes that will destroy our ancestors’ contribution. If the pews were removed, the heating system would have to be moved to under the floor and the floor would have to be made uniform, I would like to see the costing for this. My guess would be something in the order to £300,000 at least. With a slogan of Make Poverty History and the money required for all manner of human need in our own country, the removal of the pews, for instance, seems to me to be criminal and unnecessary. I’d love to hear your views on this website and look forward to seeing the church so full that I have to stand at the back. Let’s find out what the REAL majority view is.

There is to be meeting in our church on Sunday 2nd July at 6.30pm when architect Ptolemy Dean will present us with his vision from the vicar’s wish list on the ‘reordering or refreshing‘ of the church. I’m certain that with modern technology he will be able to show us how the church would look for each of the proposals.
