Bases - you know the colloquial kind - what do they mean

Picture the scene -
Boy-being, meets girl-being, beneath a silvery moon, which then explodes for no adequatly explained reason.
(no, that's Disaster Area)
Anyway, the boy-being and the girl-being get up to "stuff", then the boy-being boasts about it next day at school.
First base, Second base, third base, fourth base...
What do they actually MEAN?
(I don't know, cos I'm from the wrong side of the Atlantic).
