Cool Alternative to Raw

Hi guys,

I have fed raw the last several years, but lately have been having trouble getting the variety that I feel is necessary for a balanced diet and our butcher has been having trouble with some of his suppliers and increased prices due to the current economy and rising fuel costs.

Anyhow, I started doing research again for some alternative food ideas and came across http://www.thehonestkitchen.com

They make several dehydrated food mixes for dogs with very short ingredient lists that looked and sounded very high quality, so I tried their mix called Thrive. All I had to do was open the box, scoop some into a bowl, add water, mix, and let it sit for about ten minutes. It smelled very fresh and even my super picky Dane ate every bite. My Houla was drooling on the floor before I even gave her the bowl, so I guess it was a hit with everyone.

Anyhow, I don't sell this food or anything- I just really like it and so do the dogs. I am going to keep using this for PM feedings and will be continuing to feed raw in the AM. I just wanted to tell you guys about it as it is a nice alternative to raw, has not been affected by any recalls at any point, and is also a better food than most or all dry kibble diets out there that I have found. I ordered another mix- Force- to try as well.

This company gives a portion of their proceeds to animal organizations, one being the H$U$. I don't know if it is on-going or sporadic or as the customer directs.

I know the HSUS is not my choice for donations by any means, but I really can't be upset with a company that donates approximately 25% of their net profits to charitable causes. I am really happy with their food, my dogs are doing great on it (including the one with really bad food allergies), etc. Is there a 501(c)3 Catahoula rescue? And if so, why don't we try to get it nominated for "Charity of the Month?" That would be pretty great if it was selected!

Lauren,

CURS is a 501c3 rescue! i've used Thrive to supplement the raw diet, especially with new fosters who need extra weight. i started my dogs with it when i first started raw as i was nervous that i wouldn't be giving them everything they needed. as i became more comfortable with feeding raw i phased it out. i still keep it around for fosters when they first arrive!

Thanks for the e-mail! I just submitted the form for CURS. They may be contacting you to verify the non-profit status and I will keep my fingers crossed that the rescue will be nominated for Charity of the Month in upcoming months.

Hi Lauren, Yes, Catahoula Rescue is a 501(c)3. Thanks for posting the honest kitchen link and for the recommendation. I feed my own dogs a holistic raw diet, meaning they get lots of other things besides just meat and bones, and they do well on it, but I'm always intersted in options.
