Bordatella rant

Oh, i'm about to scream. Took the boys to the vet for their yearly about a week ago. It was a drop off so, I left a note with the tech about Spikey having an occasionaly dry hacky cough with an occasionaly puke. Did't hear anything back, Spikey it went away on it's own so, I didn't make a big deal of it.
Find out from the trainer, Florida is having a bordatella epidemic. One of the fellow student dogs had to go to the emergency room, in fact over 1/2 the dogs in the class got it. We only had 6 dogs in class today. Would have been nice to know this might have been the problem. Oi!!!

Beth, you have every right to rant over such inconsideration. That is a very serious matter, and no one wants their dogs to be ill.

People should speak up and/or stay away as soon as they know their dog is not well.
Word about Bordatella should spread quickly. I remember when it hit about here about a year ago, canine classes of all kinds and adoptions from shelter were shut down till it was over.

With the price of everything else going skyward, the last thing anyone needs is a big vet bill because their dog got sick from others.
Now, the money end of it is the least of the reasons, but it does matter.

I'm glad for you that Spikey got over it easily.
Hope that you RANT loudly to others there and pass the word. Be a voice that makes a difference!

I wouldn't say the money end is the least of it! When you are living hand to mouth, barely scrimping by, the money thing could make or break you in hard times. (Thinking of HOW MUCH I have spent on vets the past year with an upcoming surgery to remove a growing fatty tumor growing on Keiko!!!)

And if your pet gets seriously ill during a hard time, money can be a life and death issue! And not all vets will take payments. So it is maddening to think someone deliberately exposed a sick animal inconsiderately! (Especially with dog diseases such as PARVO and canine flu). Vaccines are NOT 100%. Some things are not avoidable; but those that are, should be.

And then if the dog is in crisis outside of regular vet hours, you are lucky to get by for under $500 and likely even more! And if you have lost your job, got hours cut, rent/mortgage APR, illness, etc. Money is a very big issue!

It feels "incorrect" to say money is an issue, as if it is an immoral consideration, and we should be ashamed to consider it in the well-being of our animals....but my daughter needs to be treated by a kidney specialist, and it is serious, but we do NOT have the means (we are looking into organizations that might be able to help)to get her treatment (possible surgery).

You either have the means, don't, or can work out a deal. If you don't have the means, and can't work out a deal (payment plan/help), your dog may be SOL. (And so might my daughter!)

I get disturbed when PEOPLE come to work sick and infect others as if it is being noble to drag yourself there! VERY INCONSIDERATE, and can have serious consequences to others healthwise and financially.

So I don't believe we should be apologetic to say $$$$ is an issue. (AFTER ALL, money represents an exchange for the use of part of our lives).

Just some thoughts on how people feel about money limiting our decision-making.

Feeling very philosophical this afternoon. (about money...)

I think the trainer did the best she could, the vet though I'm a little more mad at. Was at the vets, asking about a pukey cough. Would have been nice to have been told, wouldn't have taken my dog to the training the week.

We live over on the Space Coast in Brevard County. I'm glad the trainer told us about the problems throughout Florida. Theory is just like flu season, the sunbirds and tourists bring new strains down to the state.

Thanks for posting that. It's time to order ivomec, guess I'll do a bordatella round as well, it was about time again anyway........

I like the injectable. I love the instructional drawings of happy dogs waiting to have the drops put in their noses, notice it is a drawing, not an actual dog!!!!! I have been vaccinated several times with the nose drops.

OMG Beth, that is a PAIN IN THE BUTT! We went hunting with some folks from N Mississippi and they were so kind to bring it to our dogs, the 3 we took hunting brought it home to EVERYBODY. BUT, for once, I didn't vaccinate this year....

It took about 3 weeks, but it finally worked it's way through everyone and now we're vaccinated again.
