There's a lot missing in this story and, as usual, a bit of sensationalism. It takes a huge amount of heat to make an O2 tank explode so, despite what the article said, the house fire is probably what made the tank explode not the fact that the man was smoking while on O2. The smoking while on O2 is probably what started the fire, though, in the first place. Might have dropped some ashes on his clothes or the furniture he was on which started the fire.

Or if he removed the cannula, while smoking, and placed it on his lap, then his clothing is being saturated with oxygen. Now if he drops a hot ash on his clothing, chances are it may easily now ignite. Like you said, a lot left out of the story, beacuse they really don't know for sure what happened, other than that they had a fire.

Fire investigators go out on those, obviously, but just as obvously they don't have a whole lot to go on. A tank exploded in a building about 1/3 of a mile from my house some time back and it was deafening.. sounded like a bomb. Later I walked down and took a look and while the building was mostly intact there was a hole blown into the outer brick wall maybe 6 feet in diameter. Incredibly, the resident survived, but was badly burned.

The day I had my Cataract surgery I could see a fire which shut down traffic at the Interstate going N from downtown which was six miles or so away, and it had all kinds of debris flying a mile or so from both O2 and other gas tanks. Burnt about a block or so and one person died? I think and others burned.

Then too, I think about my uncle who was welding and he laid his torch down of a second and his building blew up. He required months in a Burn unit and even with close relatives those who matched had critical health issues preventing a donor for blood.

That fire was shown on TV. It was at a welding supply company with hundreds and hundreds of acetylene tanks. The flying debris were the acetylene tanks explodings.
Acetylene is the "fuel" used in welding. The oxygen is there to make it burn hotter.

Some of what you say may be true. However, oxygen DOES NOT explode nor is it combutible. It supports combustion......no more, no less. Of course that won't stop the paranoia will it?

What you say is true, however, in a situation that destroys the integrity of the container it is quite likely that sparks may be present which will be fuel for the resulting fire. A few years ago, a gentlemen with an oxygen container in his car was involved in a wreck. The integrity of the container was compromised and the wreck became a fiery inferno causing the man's death. An oxygen container just sitting there won't hurt you, but it can certainly exacerbate a situation when it is vented to the atmosphere in the presence of fire.

So I got to ask this question is there danger of cooking with a natural gas stove whil wearing my 02, also have been concerned about grilling outside . I do not have to wear my 02 all the time at this point but the time is getting close and all these things have come to my mind . Thanks

No, there is no danger in cooking on a gas stove or grilling outside IF you don't stick your nose down near the fire. If you're still concerned, just put your cannula on backward with the hose running down your back like a pony tail. Please, don't let the sensationalism of these O2/fires get to you. You know the old news saying..."If it bleeds, it reads".
