72.235.36.135Originally, my pulmo wanted me to keep a supply of Biaxin. When he had me taking it for several months, we noted that it was increasing my liver enzymes, so we now have chosen Avelox as the antibiotic of choice IF and WHEN I need it.
We try to have me only taking it sparingly--generally 7-10 days works for most infections. Lately, we've been having me be seen by a doc whenever I have signs of an infection, but it's good to have especially when I travel.
I also have 10mg tablets of prednisone, but haven't taken it in many years -- generally being able to do an inhaled steroid burst (doubling my inhaled steroid) & starting the antibiotic gets things well-controlled enough that we don't have to put me on prednisone. Again, it's good to have when I travel, since it can be tough reaching a doc with time zone differences.
Have NOT had cripping tendonitis, but sometimes hve had bursitis, so do try to minimize my use of antibiotics, but still try to nip infections as early as possible. It's tough balancing these things. None of my docs have recommended preventative antibiotics, yet.

Amoxicillin - 7 day course & Pred. 6 day wean-down course.
I have refills for both of them.

98.248.53.53I keep 10 days of AVelox(similar to Levaquin but preferred by my Doctor) I also keep at least 10 days of Amoxicillan as it is cheaper. Even at ADC Avelox is expensive. That is the big gun. - Re: Antibiotics

71.154.210.153I can't take any of the Quinolones ( Crippling Tendonitis), but am on a daily regimen of Ery-Tab 250mg 2x a day. Right now I'm on 500mg of Clarithromycin 5800mg 2x a day, so it seems that the Ery-Tabs weren't that effective in preventing a flare. - Re: Antibiotics

69.129.197.8Ten days worth of a broad-spectrum antibiotic is enough. If you need more than that you should be checking with your doc. Levaquin is fine, but look out for tendon soreness and (very rarely) tendon rupture. I use Augmentin 875mg. - Re: Antibiotics

71.154.210.153Levaquin is what left me absolutely crippled with Tendonitis! Even my Pulmonologist said the Dr who prescribed it for me in the Hospital hadn't read my drug allergy profile and apologised for him. My PCP had to backtrack from telling me that the Tendonitis was specific to Cipro when the FDA issued the warning about that class of drugs.
As far as the daily ERY - TAB - My Pulmonologist said there had been a study that this regimen had lessened exacerbations and that's why she prescribed it for me. I personally don't have too much faith in that theory and won't start it again when I'm through with the Clarithromycin. Having had a C-Difficile infection at one time, I'm a bit leary of too many antibiotics. - Re: Antibiotics

71.237.128.133When using antibiotics regularly be sure to take a strong probiotic, that helps prevent C. difficile.It also has been recommended to regulary take a probiotic if you have ever had the appendix removed.
I rotate my extra a/b's in order to try to keep effectiveness, for instance if I use levaquin then next time I need additional to what is in the triple regimen for m.avium intercellulare I use doxycycline.

98.248.53.53Lenal, I have never heard that about when you have your appendix removed you should take a probiotic. Do you know why that would be since the appendix is considered a uselss appendage at this point. I thought originally they thought it was a germ fighter but never thought it would have anything to do with the stomach or digestion. Probiotics usually help me but I just don't take them daily like I should.
