lactobacillus acidophillus

I need advice on Lactobacillus Acidophilus, I have spent time trying to figure out what Yogurt has sufficient amount of this good bacteria...to ward off Thrush. I use Advair, and after having Thrush once after a hospital stay, I do not want to go through that again!! I was trying Activia, which has Bifious Regularis, but it does not say if it also has Lactobacillus Acidophilus included. I am hoping someone is educated on this!! I thought I have read here on the forum that there is another inhaler that could take the place of Advair. My Doctor has never suggested any thing else...Thanks, Dana

I buy Rexall brand capsules at Walmart. They do not need to be refrigerated, and seem to work fine for me.

Thank you so much for your response...this has become very important to me, and after doing a search myself, it was hard to determine what to use to avoid getting thrush. When I had thrush after my hospital visit, I thought it would never go away, the Doctor suggested to use Nystatin oral, which I did and it did go away in my mouth, but after doing my search on Thrush, I see that it can also go down your throat...Yuck!!! How crazy is this!!! So to not even go there I thought it is time to find the right procedure to avoid this ever happening again, in the mouth, and no way going down my throat. My Doctor never explain exactly how bad it can get, and after reading about it, well, just do not want to go there!!! Thanks, Dana

Dana.....I know how you feel. I just had an endoscopy 2 wks. ago and the new gastro dr. showed me the pics of the back of my troat and trachea and vocal chords covered with thrush. However, he said that the Nystatin swish and swallow will get rid of it in the throat, trachea/larynx area and esophagus so he had me on that for a week (5 x day). Since I seem so susceptable to it I often wonder if I have it in my lungs. Just a thought that I've had the last couple wks. since I always am so SOB. He definitely wanted me on the probiotics ASAP......PatIN

I just had a second opinion from a leading Gastro Dr. in Indpls. (recommended by my pulmo because of uncontrolled reflux). The first thing he asked me if I was on Probiotics which I had taken on and off. He said it was important that I get one with a high count of lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium lactis in it and get a good brand. I asked him which one he specifically recommended. He said there were several that were fine but he liked I Flora-9 that could be found on the internet. I personally like the Probiotic Pearls but may try the ones he recommended when I run out of the Probiotic Pearls. He also said it takes a month of daily use to get the necessary benefits to where you should notice a difference.......PatIN

They have what you need in them as long as it says "Live" cultures is what most say, why cultures I don't know. It will say Live on the container.

Symbicort would be the other combo inhaler but the risk is the same. Anything with a steroid in it is going to need to be watched for thrush. I do think the steroids that are metered dose that you can use a spacer with probably have less problems as the powder is more apt to leave deposits in the mouth if you don't rinse really well.

I don't know about the specific strain of bacteria in yogurt, but I eat yogurt after I rinse my mouth every time I use Advair. I had thrush from it once, and I have never had even a twinge since eating yogurt. BTW I eat Activia every morning and every nightt, so I got the low cal kind :)

I take a daily dose of high potency probiotic to counter what antibiotics do, which is destroy our good flora along with the bad, and if balance isn't restored you can develop a number of problems including thrush and C. difficil (sp?)-- the formula contains a 50/50 fifteen billion blend of lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium lactis and does require refrigeration. My feeling is that doctors are negligent in not informing patients of using a probiotic. Also recently research has indicated this is extremely important if you have had your appendix removed as they now believe that it plays a role in keeping the gastro-intestinal flora balanced.

The following is a good thing to keep in mind when looking for a probiotic. I'm trying to decide on one right now. As for refrigeration, I think most of this will suggest it's best to refrigerate.

That is very interesting about the appendix. They never really did ever discover its purpose before but said it was some vestige left over from eons ago.

I have Acidophalous/Bifudus that does not require refridgeration though and seems to work well. I get mine at Trader Joes
