| COPD and eating adequately

We often encourage folks to eat protein as it aids in building adequate muscles for exercise, which is essential in COPD. A great number of folks worry about meat being really lean, and whether they need statins. In the US most of this research is sponsored by drug companies, so it's nice to see an article from a University which confirms that good food is still appropriate. Our bodies use fat in a number of ways but especially in muscle growth and energy. It also helps skin, hair and flavor. Muscle weighs more than fat, so pound for pound, if you are too lean, you may actually have less muscle than you need to even adequately circulate blood. Good circulation aided by good muscles, adds to oxygen circulation and also means less fatique, and even edema. I may not know a whole lot about DLCO, but I do know that about the only thing that improves DLCO is exercise. When you want to feel better, eat well and exercise for better oxygen circulation. Good test for your muscles: Can you rise out of a chair without pushing yourself off the chair? (It's important because you need to be able to get off and on toilets, too.)
