Thanks for those comments, John O.
Specifically about the inhaled steroids which you mention, I've asked her and she says she deliberately doesn't use them because she thought the side effects were worse than the benefits.
Apparently she only uses a bronchodilator at the moment.
Maybe I could encourage her to try some different meds, and possibly a different doctor.
