Using the 85% figure is not always wise. It depends on how fit you are. Here is a link from the American heart assoc site which explains it better.http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4736
Every site I looked at said it depended on how fit you were as to what your heart rate should be. My cardiologist was shocked that another cardiologist had me go to 150 on the treadmill considering I had COPD. I only made it to 145 before I thought my heart was going to blow up and he was surprised I made it to that. I would never do that again.
