I went "cold turkey" from a three pack/day habit back in 1985. At that time I was in for a heart cath and they just happened to say that my lungs show that I have COPD.
I had to ask what it meant. In those days the theory was that once you quit, your lungs would be back to normal in about five years. How little we knew. However, if I had not quit, I doubt if I would be typing this at the moment. It wasn't until about 1997, 12 years after I quit that I began to show signs of SOB.I did not have to go on O2 until 2003. My cessation of smoking did not cure the damage that I had done, but it sure improved the angle of the downhill slope.
