The only time I was told by a pulmo to keep my oxygen level down to 88-91 was when I was having a bad time with CO2 retention. That was several years ago, and looking back, I'm not so sure that was good advice. I believe that breathing exercises we've talked about on this forum recently (abdominal breathing w/PLB) does more to relieve the CO2 buildup. That pulmo never mentioned that important technique to me. He may not even have known about it.
Doctors, and pulmos as well, unfortunately are not all equal in their expertise. Most will answer questions; few will tell you everything you should know. That stuff we have to learn on our own, through rehab, research, and this forum in particular.
Having been around the block more than a few times with COPD problems, one thing I have learned is that we all need to do our own research, ask a lot of questions, and sometimes we even need to change pulmos.
