Chris, as always, I appreciate your thoughtful perspective set out in your post. Dr. Petty indicated that only when you receive O2 through a mask would you need to begin worrying about getting too much O2--for those using a cannula, any excess O2 just goes out into the atmosphere.
Of course, it's best to have a dialog about adjusting O2 with your physician, especially if you have a history of CO2 retention.
Because there s a 2-3% margin of measurement error in using oximeters, it seems useful to have O2 levels of 92-93% or so, which is what some docs order. Mine has always been happy with 90%, but never objected when it gets higher than that.
