The long-acting bronchodilator salmeterol is the only ingredient in Serevent and one of the two ingredients in Advair. The amount in each is 50mcg. So whether you take Advair 500/50 or 250/50, or even 100/50 makes no difference as far as the amount of bronchodilator is concerned. The other number (500, 250, 100) is fluticasone, a steroid. It's likely that if your heart rate goes up at all it is because of the salmeterol and not the fluticasone. Salmeterol is not generally referred to as a rescue medication--for that you'd want a short-acting bronchodilator like albuterol.
