I use a bunch of good old sponges and keep a bottle dispenser from a former soap with a push down spigot. I buy regular dawn soap and dilute by half with water and punch the dispenser down for dollaps of soap. When the sponge gets in need of care, I put it into the dishwasher or thru the laundry.
Since I have a bunch, I'm not smearing stuff around and there's always some soap. Because the soap is diluted, it doesn't get gummy on surfaces but dries clean.
It becomes instinctive to leave a sponge in the sink and swipe knives and other utensils that might otherwise be a source of bacteria. I change utensils often when cooking, as raw food is suspect, and I won't serve with the utensils that handle it. Swiped with a soapy sponge they can wait for a good wash. With all the wipes on the market, sponges have gotten very cheap. They still work well for me.
