July 12, 2008 - New Melones Reservoir – Perfect summer weather highlighted a fabulous day on the water for 120 anglers who participated in the 4th Annual CIFFI Team Kokanee Tournament at New Melones Reservoir. This is the big one, where the best of the best compete for $10,000 in cash prizes. The team tournament format has proven to make a very competitive derby, with only a few repeaters showing up in the winners column.
CIFFI wishes to thank the sponsor of this event - San Joaquin Drywall. Without the major underwriting of this derby by San Joaquin Drywall, this event would not happen.
The derby meal was catered by Silver Sage Catering and featured Prime rib, corn on the cob and salad. Plenty of food provided those hungry enough with the opportunity for seconds and thirds.
The fish were measured for length at this year’s derby, keeping the weigh masters busy tallying almost 300 fish for the day. This year’s fish were significantly larger than last years, showing that a well managed lake in partnership with the California DFG and CIFFI, results in a better quality angling experience for all who pursue kokanee.
This derby continues to set the standard for payouts for kokanee anglers in California. Payouts for the top five spots exceeded $7,000. Big fish payouts topped $2,500.
CIFFI wishes to thank all of this years participants for their continued support of CIFFI and it’s endeavors to improve the inland fisheries of California. Without the dedication of its members, supporters and volunteers - CIFFI would be unable to do the good work it has done since 1992.
Funds generated by CIFFI’s derbies go directly to fund the improvement of fisheries and educational endeavors throughout California. Since 1992, CIFFI - Project Kokanee - has partnered with the California Department of Fish and Game to fund the continued planting of kokanee salmon, installation of rearing pens and support of fisheries in California’s lakes.
